New Books

Thank you for continuing to support our school fundraising through the Tuesday Sausage Sizzle.
This week the teachers got to spend some of the money raised, at The Kilbirnie Book Shop. They have bought a lot of new books for our library and classrooms.

Painting The Garden Boxes

Recently the eco warriors have been painting our vege garden boxes. Next term we will begin to start planting in them. Some of the money that is raised at the Sausage Sizzle on Tuesdays will go to funding our vege garden next term and buying the paint.
Here are some opinions on how it went...
  • Hot tiring fun and messy - Molly
  • Fun because I got to hang out with my friends -Betty
  • Cool because I felt like a builder-Hunter
  • Fun because we got to talk. And get the job done that we needed to get done.-Connor
  • It was fun because we got to paint and not do work.-Charlie

Worser Bay School Waste Audit Report

On Wednesday 4th June 2014, The Sustainability Trust helped Worser Bay School to carry out a waste audit.

This involved sorting and measuring a day’s worth of the School’s rubbish and waste.

This is what they found out.
The amount of waste that was to go to the landfill was 8.42 kg. This 8.42 kg was emptied out and sorted into recyclable and compo stable materials. Only 1.39 kg (16%) of the 8.42 kg, needed to go to landfill. The remaining 7.03 kg (84%) could have been diverted through recycling or composting.

Overall compostable material made up 43% of this day’s waste. Recyclable material made up 19% of this day’s waste.

The Sustainability Trust has made some recommendations on how we can further reduce our waste.

Overall, Worser Bay School compares extremely well against other schools. By making some minor changes, our school could be a leader in School Waste Management in Wellington! Remember to keep looking on our school blog to see how you can help.

Reusable Lunch Wraps

We are trying to make our school eco friendly. One of the recommendations from the Sustainable Trust is to use reusable lunch wrappers and lunch boxes that have many compartments in them.
We have found this website where these can be purchased.
Please have a look. http://www.gingerpye.co.nz/
They are also available at The Warehouse, New World and Moore Wilson's.

The Storage Box in Marion Street also has many varieties of lunch boxes that have many compartments. These are good because then you don't need to use plastic wraps.

Please look at their website to find out what is available.
