On Wednesday 4th June 2014, The Sustainability Trust helped Worser Bay
School to carry out a waste audit.
This involved sorting and measuring a day’s worth of the School’s rubbish
and waste.
This is what they found out.
The amount of waste that was to go to the landfill was 8.42 kg. This 8.42
kg was emptied out and sorted into recyclable and compo stable materials. Only
1.39 kg (16%) of the 8.42 kg, needed to go to landfill. The remaining 7.03 kg
(84%) could have been diverted through recycling or composting.
Overall compostable material made up 43% of this day’s waste. Recyclable
material made up 19% of this day’s waste.
The Sustainability Trust has made some recommendations on how we can
further reduce our waste.
Overall, Worser Bay School compares
extremely well against other schools. By making some minor changes, our school
could be a leader in School Waste Management in Wellington! Remember to keep looking on
our school blog to see how you can help.
